Knuckle Duster, or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation

Chiropractor’s can crack bones and we can work on loosening up muscles too. Now we have a new tool, called the edge tool, for working on the bits in between.

Your connective tissue is composed mainly of tendons, ligaments and fascia and it is these tissues that the edge tool is designed to work on. Our connective tissue can be torn in a variety of ways. Sometimes it happens in one big tear like during an acute ankle sprain, where a tendon or ligament may break in two or tear away from a bone. When this hppens part of the healing process your body employs is to form scar tissue. Scar tissue is not as strong as the original ligament or tendon and that is one of the reasons that once an ankle is sprained it is very likely that it will sprain again.

Another type of connective tissue injury is fascial micro tearing. This is common in runners thighs especially the outer part over the iliotibial band, or ITB. These little tears and the scar tissue that forms around them serve to make ITB harder and less springy. A lot of lateral knee pain in runners is attributed to the process of grdaul tearing an hardening of runner’s knee’s.

It has been demonstrated that a tool like the edge tool may help to break up or remodel fascial layers by gently stripping them back and forth. This has proved useful with the aforementioned sprained ankles. With runners knee’s and variety of other conditions.

It is thought the particular angle the edge is machined to, as well as the material of construction create a mild electrical charge in the tissue below the skin and this induces remodelling of that tissue. Helping to from new healthy ligament tendon and fascia and resorbing old scar tissue.

You can work on your connective tissue at home with foam rollers and trigger point balls but if you’re not getting too where you want to be try the edge tool to get a little further.
