Healthy Pelvis for a Comfortable Pregnancy and Birth
There is a very intimate relationship between the pelvis of a pregnant woman and the birth canal. The bony structures of the pelvis are both directly and indirectly connected to the uterus through a system of intricate soft tissues including many ligaments and muscles.
The quality of the function of the pelvis, the quality of movement patterns in the body, the strength and coordination of muscles and a woman’s history of injury can all influence the experience of pregnancy and birth.
When you think about it logically, it makes sense that if there is an underlying musculoskeletal issue, especially with the pelvis, it can potentially (and often does) increase the chance of undue pain, discomfort and challenges during pregnancy and childbirth.
One of the most common complaints during pregnancy is low back pain. Although some low back pain is to be expected, it should not affect a woman’s day –to- day life and be cause for stress and anxiety. It is a sign that something may not be right with the musculoskeletal system, and you may need to have your lower back and pelvis checked by a health care professional such as a Chiropractor.
By having a balanced and well functioning pelvis and a structure that moves and glides symmetrically, without placing pressure on the connective tissues attached to the uterus, it is allowing the growing baby to have an environment where they are free to move and grow to their full potential and allows the pregnant mother the chance to have a more comfortable pregnancy and birthing experience.
