Is a chiropractor covered by Bupa and Medibank?
Does health insurance cover chiropractic treatment?
Yes. Chiropractic care is covered by most Australian private health insurance policies, provided you hold extras cover (sometimes called “ancillary” or “general treatment” cover) that includes chiropractic.
If you’ve been wondering whether your health fund will help cover the cost of seeing a chiropractor in Brisbane, this guide explains which funds cover chiropractic, how claiming works, and how to get the most from your policy.
Which health funds cover chiropractic?
Almost all major Australian health insurers offer chiropractic as part of their extras cover. The health funds that typically include chiropractic benefits are:
- Bupa
- Medibank Private
- HCF
- NIB
- AHM
- CBHS
- HBF
- Defence Health
- Police Health
- Queensland Country Health Fund
- Australian Unity
- Westfund
- Teachers Health
- GMHBA
- Frank Health Insurance
This is not an exhaustive list. Most registered health funds in Australia recognise chiropractic as a claimable extras service. At Chiropractic Moves in Paddington, Brisbane, we can process claims for all of the above and many more through our HICAPS terminal.
What does “extras cover” mean?
Private health insurance in Australia has two main components:
- Hospital cover: Covers in-hospital treatment and procedures.
- Extras cover: Covers out-of-hospital services like chiropractic, dental, physiotherapy, optical, and remedial massage.
Chiropractic falls under extras cover. The amount you can claim depends on your specific policy and level of cover. Some entry-level extras policies may not include chiropractic, while mid-to-top-level policies typically do.
Important things to check on your policy:
- Annual benefit limit: The maximum amount your fund will pay towards chiropractic in a year (often shared with other services like physiotherapy or osteopathy).
- Per-visit rebate: The dollar amount you receive back per consultation. This varies by fund and policy. For chiropractic, per-visit rebates typically range from $30 to $60.
- Waiting period: Most extras policies have a two-month waiting period for chiropractic before you can start claiming.
How to check your chiropractic cover
The easiest way to check your chiropractic benefits is to:
- Log in to your health fund’s app or website and look under “extras” or “general treatment” benefits. Search for “chiropractic” to see your per-visit rebate and remaining annual limit.
- Call your health fund and ask: “What is my chiropractic benefit per visit, and how much of my annual limit have I used?”
- Bring your card to your appointment. We can swipe it at our HICAPS terminal and it will show you instantly what your fund will pay.
On-the-spot claiming with HICAPS
At Chiropractic Moves, we have a HICAPS terminal, an electronic health claims system that processes your private health insurance claim instantly at the time of your appointment.
Here’s how it works:
- After your consultation, we swipe your health fund card through the HICAPS terminal.
- The system communicates directly with your health fund in seconds.
- Your rebate is processed on the spot.
- You only pay the gap (the difference between our consultation fee and your health fund rebate).
There’s no need to pay the full fee upfront and then submit a claim later. It’s quick, convenient, and means less paperwork for you. HICAPS is partnered with many major health funds in Australia, so regardless of who you’re insured with, there’s a good chance we can process your claim on the spot.
What is a gap payment?
The “gap” is simply the difference between what your chiropractor charges and what your health fund pays back. For example, if your standard consultation is $78 and your fund rebates $45, your gap payment would be $33.
Gap amounts vary between health funds and policy levels. Some higher-level policies, particularly those with “preferred provider” or “Members First” arrangements, may offer higher rebates or even no-gap benefits at selected clinics.
Medicare and the GP Chronic Condition Management Plan
Standard chiropractic visits aren’t covered by Medicare. However, if you have a chronic condition (lasting six months or longer), you may be eligible for subsidised visits through a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP).
Under this plan, your GP can refer you to a chiropractor for up to five Medicare-subsidised sessions per calendar year. The Medicare rebate is currently $61.80 per session. This can be used on its own or in combination with your private health insurance, though you can’t claim both Medicare and private health fund rebates on the same visit.
To find out if you’re eligible, speak with your GP about whether a GPCCMP is appropriate for your condition. You can read more about chiropractic costs and payment options in our guide to chiropractor costs in Brisbane.
How to maximise your chiropractic rebate
Here are some practical tips to help you get the most from your health insurance for chiropractic care:
- Know when your benefits reset: Most funds reset in January or April. Schedule any remaining visits before the reset so you don’t lose unused benefits.
- Check for combined limits: Some policies share a single annual limit across chiropractic, physiotherapy, and other therapies. Be aware of how this affects your available balance.
- Consider upgrading your extras: If you visit a chiropractor regularly, a mid-level or top-level extras policy may offer significantly higher annual limits and per-visit rebates, potentially saving you money overall.
- Ask your GP about a GPCCMP: If you have a qualifying chronic condition, the Medicare pathway can provide additional subsidised visits beyond what your private cover offers.
- Bring your card to every visit: This ensures you can claim your rebate on the spot through HICAPS, rather than having to submit claims separately.
