Attack of the Skinny Jeans: A Cause of Meraligia Parasthetica

Although they are at the height of fashion and look fabulous, skinny jeans may be a risk to our health. Including, being a cause of a little syndrome called Meraligia Parasthetica. Which is now increasingly on the rise, especially in the younger patient demographic.

What is Meralgia Parasthetica?

It is a neurological condition in which a nerve in the upper thigh (called the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve) becomes inflamed or entrapped.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain in the outer lateral thigh
  • Pins and needles, numbness or burning sensations in the outer lateral thigh
  • Hypersensetivity to touch on the same area
  • “bee sting” sensations

 Causes:

  • tight Clothing, i.e. SKINNY JEANS, or stockings
  • weight gains

This can lead to pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve.

 Treatment Options

Chiropractic treatments may help to mobilise and balance the pelvis and also release muscles and ligaments in the hip to help to remove pressure on the nerve and encourage inflammation to settle.

Other alternative treatmeant options may be to take a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug or receive a deep tissue massage.

It is also, of coarse, advisable to wear looser clothing and perhaps refrain from wearing those super skinny jeans and give your legs room to breathe.
