Guide to chiropractic adjustments

A chiropractic adjustment is a powerful thing. It is the main tool a chiropractor uses in their treatment ‘toolbox’ and it not only feels good, but it is highly therapeutic. It is one of the main reasons that chiropractic treatments give such good results for so many different complaints. In this blog, I will explain the mechanics and physiology of an adjustment.

An adjustment is a controlled, short and quick movement (thrust) applied to a joint, either on the spine or on a peripheral joint such as the wrist or ankle. It quickly stretches the small muscles and ligaments surrounding the joint, often releasing a small amount of gas; this can sound like a popping or cracking noise.

This quick stretch of the joint leads to an impressive neuro-physiological response in the body, which stimulates areas in the brain that control, proprioception (our perception and balance), pain, and endorphins (our feel good hormones). This is why an adjustment can be so beneficial, therapeutic and feels so good.

There is an ever-growing body of evidence to support the benefits of Chiropractic adjustments in the relief of many conditions such as low back pain, cervicogenic headaches and neck pain.
