Terrible Torn Up Tendons
Tendon sprains, strains and tears are exceedingly common, affecting the athletic population as well as the sedentary population. Your doctor or other health professional may refer to these injuries as tendinopathy, tendinosis, tenosynovitis or even tendinitis.
Modern medical science is starting to have some success identifying the processes that lead to tendon degeneration. There are trials ongoing in the UK, Europe and the USA using stem cells to grow new healthy tissue and tumour inhibiting proteins which retard degradation. These trials are only just entering the human testing phase however and the most proven treatment techniques rely on reducing loading and increasing healthy cell proportions by the old favourite exercise.
One of the most common is the Achilles tendinopathy which seems to affect the overactive and the inactive to great extent while sparing the moderately active. Eccentric squats, concentric loads and heavy resistance training have all been shown to be useful in rehabilitating achilles tendinopathy. Treatment is even starting to lean towards proper bracing and physical therapy for complete tendon ruptures as a preferable alternative to surgically fixing the ends of the tendon back together, merely moving the ends of the tendons back into proximity heals the injury through entirely the same mechanism as surgery!
